Review GRAY RESEARCH Vintage Stereo Inch Broadcast Turntable Tonearm 212 As Is #2

The **Research 212TG Stereo 12" Broadcast Turntable with Tonearm 212** is a meticulously engineered, high-performance vinyl playback system designed for audiophiles, DJs, and broadcast professionals who demand precision, reliability, and superior sound quality. Built upon Research s decades of expertise in turntable manufacturing, this model combines a robust 12-inch aluminum platter with a direct-drive motor, ensuring smooth, vibration-free operation and consistent speed accuracy ( 0.02% at 33 RPM). The platter s precision-balanced design minimizes wobble, while the integrated counterweight system enhances stability, making it ideal for both studio and live performance environments. The tonearm, designated as the **212**, is a masterpiece of ergonomic engineering, featuring a fully counterbalanced, anti-skating mechanism that eliminates tracking errors and ensures even pressure across the entire record surface. Constructed from high-grade aluminum with a precision-machined bearing assembly, the tonearm delivers exceptional tracking accuracy and durability, even with heavy cartridges. Its adjustable counterweight and anti-skating control allow for fine-tuned customization, catering to a wide range of stylus types and playback preferences. The turntable s robust chassis, crafted from cast aluminum, is engineered to dampen external vibrations, while the integrated dust cover and anti-rattle design further protect the mechanism from environmental interference. Whether used in a professional broadcast studio, a high-end home audio setup, or a DJ booth, the **212TG** excels in delivering crystal-clear, dynamic sound with minimal distortion. Its combination of broadcast-grade reliability, audiophile-grade components, and versatile functionality makes it a standout choice for those who prioritize both performance and longevity in their vinyl playback experience.

### **Pros and Cons of the Research 212TG Stereo 12" Broadcast Turntable with Tonearm 212**

#### **Pros**

1. **High-Quality Sound Reproduction**

The Research 212TG is designed with audiophile-grade components, including a high-mass platter and a precision-machined tonearm (212 model). This setup delivers accurate sound with minimal distortion, making it suitable for both casual listening and critical audio evaluation.

2. **Broadcast-Grade Construction**

As a broadcast turntable, it is built to professional standards, featuring durable materials and tight tolerances. This ensures long-term reliability, which is important for frequent use in studios or home setups.

3. **Smooth and Stable Operation**

The turntable employs a direct-drive motor, eliminating the need for a belt, which reduces wear and tear over time. This also contributes to a more consistent speed (33 RPM) with minimal speed fluctuations.

4. **Adjustable Counterweight and Anti-Skate**

The tonearm (212 model) includes an adjustable counterweight and anti-skate mechanism, allowing for fine-tuning of tracking force and anti-skate tension. This customization helps optimize performance for different records and stylus types.

5. **Compatibility with High-End Accessories**

The Research 212TG is designed to work seamlessly with premium cartridges, such as the Research 212 cartridge or third-party options like Ortofon, Denon, or Audio-Technica. This flexibility allows users to upgrade their setup as needed.

6. **Durable and Aesthetic Design**

The turntable features a sturdy metal base and a clean, professional appearance, making it suitable for both home and studio environments. The build quality reflects its broadcast heritage.

7. **Good for DJs and Broadcast Use**

While primarily an audiophile turntable, its robust construction and stable operation make it a viable option for DJs or broadcast applications where reliability is key.

#### **Cons**

1. **Higher Initial Cost**

The Research 212TG is not an entry-level turntable. Its professional-grade components and build quality come at a premium price, which may be prohibitive for casual listeners or beginners.

2. **Requires Additional Accessories**

Unlike some all-in-one turntables, the Research 212TG does not include a built-in preamp or phono stage. Users will need to purchase a separate phono preamp (e.g., Pro-Ject, Audio-Technica, or a high-end model like the Research 212 preamp) to connect it to an amplifier or receiver.

3. **Heavy and Bulky**

The turntable is relatively heavy (around 20-25 lbs), which can make it less portable. Users with limited space or who frequently move their setup may find it cumbersome.

4. **Learning Curve for Setup and Tuning**

Achieving optimal performance with the Research 212TG requires some technical knowledge. Users must properly align the tonearm, adjust the counterweight and anti-skate, and ensure the platter is balanced. This may not be ideal for those who prefer plug-and-play simplicity.

5. **Limited Built-in Features**

Unlike some modern turntables with built-in USB interfaces or Bluetooth, the Research 212TG is a traditional analog-only unit. While this is a strength for audiophiles, it may be a drawback for users who want digital integration or modern conveniences.

6. **Cartridge Not Included**

The turntable itself does not come with a cartridge. Users must purchase one separately, which adds to the overall cost. The choice of cartridge significantly impacts sound quality, so this is an important consideration.

---

### **Conclusion and Recommendation**

The **Research 212TG Stereo 12" Broadcast Turntable with Tonearm 212** is an excellent choice for audiophiles, DJs, or broadcast professionals who prioritize sound quality, durability, and professional-grade performance. Its direct-drive motor, precise tonearm, and high-mass platter deliver accurate and consistent playback, making it a reliable workhorse for serious listeners. The ability to customize tracking force and anti-skate further enhances its versatility.

However, the turntable s higher cost, lack of built-in electronics, and requirement for additional accessories may not appeal to casual users or those on a tight budget. It is also not a plug-and-play solution, as proper setup and tuning are necessary to achieve optimal results.

**Recommendation:**

- **Buy if:** You are an audiophile, DJ, or broadcast professional who values high-quality sound, durability, and customization. You are willing to invest in additional accessories (preamp, cartridge) and have some technical knowledge for setup.

- **Avoid if:** You are a beginner, prefer modern digital features, or are looking for a budget-friendly or portable turntable. In such cases, consider alternatives like the **Pro-Ject T3**, **Audio-Technica AT-LP60X**, or **Technics SL-1200G** for a more accessible entry into turntable ownership.

For those who appreciate the craftsmanship and performance of broadcast-grade turntables, the Research 212TG remains a strong and respected option in the audiophile market.
