The Technics SL-B1 Stylus FG Belt-Drive Turntable is a popular choice among audiophiles due to its high-quality sound and classic design. Here are some pros and cons to consider before making a purchase:
Pros:1. Belt-drive design reduces vibration and improves sound quality compared to direct-drive turntables.
2. High-quality construction with a die-cast aluminum platter and heavy-duty steel chassis for reduced resonance.
3. The SL-B1 comes equipped with a high-quality Ortofon OM5E cartridge which provides excellent tracking and sound reproduction.
4. The turntable features a speed selection switch for 33 1/3, 45, and 78 RPM records.
5. The classic design and build quality make it a timeless addition to any home audio setup.
Cons:1. The SL-B1 is a more expensive option compared to other entry-level turntables, which may be a barrier for some budget-conscious shoppers.
2. The turntable does not come with a built-in phono preamp, so an external preamp is required for connecting the turntable to a receiver or amplifier.
3. The SL-B1 is a heavy turntable, weighing around 13 kg, making it difficult to move around or transport.
In conclusion, the Technics SL-B1 Stylus FG Belt-Drive Turntable offers excellent sound quality, high-quality construction, and a classic design. However, the high price point and the requirement for an external preamp may be a turnoff for some shoppers. If you are looking for a high-quality turntable and are willing to pay a premium, the SL-B1 is an excellent choice. But if you're on a tight budget or prefer a more portable option, you may want to consider other entry-level turntables.
The belt was recently replaced.
The cartridge is a recon um 500a with a good stylus. Even though 'entry level' and not very expensive, it had respectable specifications and now, 35 plus years later, this one sounds excellent. All controls work as expected.
I will do the same for you. Cables are original and excellent.
Stylus is good and sound is excellent. There are some signs of use including two small spots of adhesive on the plinth, probably where a level or some other accessory was attached. I have successfully shipped a number of turntables to very happy buyers. This is a nice example of a fairly rare Technics turntable.
