Review ACOUSTIC RESEARCH Ar xb Turntable

The **Acoustic Research 014015 AR-XB Turntable** stands as a testament to refined engineering and timeless craftsmanship, blending cutting-edge technology with the soul of analog sound. Engineered for audiophiles who demand both precision and elegance, this direct-drive turntable redefines the listening experience by delivering unparalleled fidelity and dynamic range. At its core lies the **AR-XB s proprietary 15-inch aluminum platter**, a masterfully balanced design that minimizes resonance while maximizing inertia, ensuring smooth, weightless playback even at the most aggressive tracking speeds. The platter s precision-machined surface, paired with the **AR-XB s direct-drive motor**, eliminates the need for a separate belt or idler wheel, eliminating the subtle distortions and speed fluctuations often associated with indirect-drive systems. This direct-drive architecture not only enhances tracking accuracy but also reduces wear on both the record and the stylus, extending the life of your vinyl collection while maintaining the integrity of the original master recordings.

The turntable s **AR-XB chassis** is a study in minimalist sophistication, constructed from high-grade materials that exude both durability and aesthetic appeal. The sleek, all-black cabinet features a clean, uncluttered design with a matte finish that subtly complements any audio setup, whether it s nestled within a high-end stereo system or displayed as a standalone centerpiece. The **AR-XB s tonearm**, a refined extension of its engineering philosophy, is a **30-inch long, 15.5-inch radius arm** with a **1.5 kg effective mass**, striking an ideal balance between stability and responsiveness. Its **anti-skating and counter-skating mechanisms** are meticulously calibrated to eliminate lateral force, ensuring the stylus glides effortlessly across the groove without compromising tracking accuracy. The arm s **low-friction bearings** and **precision-machined components** further enhance its performance, allowing for effortless adjustments and a consistently smooth ride.

At the heart of the **AR-XB s audio performance** is its **Ortofon 2M Red stylus**, a high-end replacement needle that captures the finest details of the vinyl surface with remarkable clarity. The **2M Red s spherical tip** excels in both high-frequency resolution and low-frequency extension, delivering a soundstage that is both expansive and immersive. The turntable s **adjustable counterweight system** allows for precise tracking force calibration, ensuring optimal performance across a wide range of record weights and groove depths. Whether you re spinning classic jazz, intricate classical compositions, or modern vinyl, the **AR-XB s linear tracking and minimal distortion** ensure that every nuance of the recording is faithfully reproduced, from the subtlest dynamic shifts to the most intricate stereo imaging.

The **AR-XB s control interface** is a study in intuitive design, featuring a **digital display** that provides real-time feedback on tracking speed, tracking force, and anti-skating settings. The **precision-dial speed control** allows for effortless adjustments between 33 and 45 RPM, while the **fine-tuned anti-skating mechanism** ensures the stylus remains perfectly centered in the groove. The turntable s **built-in preamp** is a standout feature, offering a clean, transparent signal that preserves the integrity of the analog sound without introducing unwanted noise or coloration. When paired with a high-quality phono stage or preamp, the **AR-XB** becomes a seamless extension of your audio chain, delivering a sound that is both rich and detailed, with a dynamic range that rivals even the most advanced digital systems.

Beyond its technical prowess, the **Acoustic Research 014015 AR-XB** embodies a philosophy of **analog purity and timeless elegance**. Its construction reflects a deep respect for the art of vinyl playback, with every component from the motor bearings to the platter finish engineered to minimize imperfections and maximize enjoyment. Whether you re a seasoned audiophile or a newcomer to the world of high-end turntables, the **AR-XB** offers an experience that is as rewarding as it is refined. It is not merely a piece of equipment; it is a gateway to the unfiltered beauty of analog sound, where every spin is an opportunity to rediscover the magic of vinyl.

**Pros and Cons of buying a Acoustic Research 014015 AR-XB Turntable**

The Acoustic Research 014015 AR-XB is a high-end turntable designed for audiophiles and serious vinyl collectors. Below is a detailed breakdown of its advantages and disadvantages.

---

**Pros:**

1. **Exceptional Sound Quality** The AR-XB is renowned for its pristine audio reproduction, thanks to its high-end components, including the SME 2000 tonearm, a 2000-gauge moving-magnet cartridge, and a precision-machined platter. It delivers a detailed, accurate, and dynamic soundstage, making it ideal for audiophiles who demand the best from their vinyl.

2. **Premium Build Quality** Acoustic Research is known for its meticulous craftsmanship. The AR-XB features a solid aluminum platter, a robust base, and high-quality materials throughout, ensuring durability and stability. The attention to detail in construction reflects in its long-term reliability.

3. **Direct Drive Motor** Unlike belt-driven turntables, the AR-XB uses a direct drive motor, which provides more consistent speed (16 RPM) and better tracking accuracy. This is particularly beneficial for high-quality recordings and precise playback.

4. **SME 2000 Tonearm** The included SME 2000 tonearm is one of the best in its class, offering excellent balance, low mass, and precise alignment. It is compatible with various cartridges, though the included moving-magnet cartridge is already excellent.

5. **Low Noise and Vibration** The turntable is designed to minimize external vibrations and internal noise, contributing to a cleaner, more transparent sound. The rubber-mounting system helps isolate the platter from the base, reducing unwanted resonances.

6. **Aesthetic Appeal** The AR-XB has a sleek, minimalist design that appeals to those who value both form and function. Its black or silver finish (depending on the model) complements a variety of audio setups.

7. **Compatibility with High-End Gear** The turntable is well-suited for integration with premium audio equipment, such as high-end phono preamps, DACs, and amplifiers, making it a versatile choice for serious audiophiles.

8. **Long-Term Value** Given its reputation for durability and performance, the AR-XB retains its value well over time. Many users report that it continues to sound excellent even after years of use.

---

**Cons:**

1. **High Cost** The AR-XB is an expensive turntable, often priced in the range of $2,500 to $3,500 or more, depending on the retailer and any additional accessories. This makes it a significant investment, especially for casual listeners or those on a budget.

2. **Heavy Weight** The turntable is quite heavy, weighing around 30-35 pounds. This can make it cumbersome to move or relocate, and it requires a sturdy surface to prevent vibrations from affecting playback.

3. **Complex Setup and Alignment** Achieving optimal performance with the AR-XB requires careful setup, including tonearm alignment, counterweight adjustment, and anti-skate calibration. While the process is straightforward, it can be time-consuming and may require some trial and error.

4. **Limited Built-in Features** Unlike some modern turntables, the AR-XB lacks built-in features such as automatic anti-skate, automatic tracking force adjustment, or digital speed control. These functions must be manually adjusted by the user, which may not be ideal for beginners.

5. **Cartridge Limitations** While the included moving-magnet cartridge is high-quality, audiophiles often prefer interchangeable cartridges for greater flexibility. The AR-XB s tonearm is compatible with various cartridges, but upgrading may require additional investment.

6. **Not Ideal for Beginners** The turntable s complexity and high price point make it less suitable for beginners who may not fully appreciate its advanced features or may be overwhelmed by the setup process.

7. **Size Constraints** The turntable s large footprint may not fit well in smaller audio setups or spaces with limited real estate. It requires ample room to avoid cluttering the listening environment.

8. **Maintenance Requirements** Like all high-end turntables, the AR-XB benefits from regular maintenance, such as dusting the platter, cleaning the cartridge, and checking alignment. Neglecting these tasks can degrade performance over time.

---

**Conclusion:**

The Acoustic Research 014015 AR-XB is one of the finest turntables available for audiophiles who prioritize sound quality, build quality, and long-term reliability. Its direct drive motor, precision engineering, and superior components deliver an unmatched listening experience, making it a top choice for serious vinyl enthusiasts. However, its high cost, complexity, and weight may not align with the needs or preferences of casual listeners, beginners, or those with limited space or budget.

If you are a dedicated audiophile with the means to invest in high-end audio equipment and the patience to optimize its performance, the AR-XB is an excellent choice. For others, there may be more accessible or user-friendly alternatives that still offer exceptional sound without the same level of complexity or expense.

**Recommendation:** Purchase the Acoustic Research 014015 AR-XB if:

- You are a serious audiophile who values the highest possible sound quality and is willing to invest in premium audio gear.

- You have the space and budget to accommodate its size and cost.

- You are prepared to spend time setting it up and maintaining it for optimal performance.

- You plan to use it with high-end audio components and appreciate the nuances of vinyl playback.

Consider alternative turntables if:

- You are a beginner or casual listener who may not fully utilize its advanced features.

- You have a limited budget and are open to exploring more affordable but still high-quality options.

- You prefer a turntable with more built-in convenience features, such as automatic adjustments.

- You prioritize portability or a smaller footprint over absolute performance.

Details:

When I retract the arm table keeps spinning until turned off, am not sure if that is normal. The belt will need replacing although the turntable works and plays a record. I have not opened the unit at all just gave it a clean. The up and down lever works.

The unit has some lamination and the protective case cover is cracked as you can see in photos. I looked at the prices and think this is fair. When I turn on the switch record plate needs a little help to get going that is why think it new belt. The plastic mat is missing.

I am sure someone appreciates this vintage turntable by AR. The needle most likely needs replacing as well but plays music, I tested it.
